Brakes

Firstly,

Mods, I know this has probably been covered before in hundreds of different topics but I cant find some of the info I'm after so could we try and get everything in one topic?

Guys,
Facts only please! Your opinions on your car. Not, I heard from some guy who's mate's brother knew someone who thought about buying....

I am after an uprated brake kit and am not sure what to go for.

I wont be on the track twice a week or anything like that so don't want a set up that doesn't work well at normal opperating temps as well. However, I don't want them warping after a 'spirited' blast down a back lane.

So, what kits have you got fitted? What sort of driving do you do? And have they been up to the job so far?

Any other info you feel would be useful to me (and many other members I'm sure) would be great.

To keep the mods happy I'll even put together a 'brake guide' if it would be useful.

Thanks,
Dunc

I have drilled and grooved standard size Brake discs with Mintex Racing pads and if I am in the car on my own or with the Missus they are fine but if I have like 5 heads in my car and I am giving it some pedal they will start to fade after the 3rd/4th heavy brake :x which is not good if your other friend in his ESCORT COSWORTH  has AP's.

So for that reason alone I have purchased a set of Hi-Spec 325mm discs with Monster 4 pots and green stuff pads, but these will not be fitted until Thursday but when they are fitted I will let you know what they are like and if they are up to the job 8)

Trying not to add anyone else's opinions I've heard from them... ah sod it, I'm going to tell you anyway, may as well pass on the benefits of my research, lol.

I have the Wilwood 280mm 4-pot kit, using the new Midilite caliper. I've been mostly impressed with these, as when they work properly they can pop your eyeballs. They managed 10 laps of Castle Coombe without fade (although some laps were in the rain, not that I slowed down much), and on the road they only need one good squeeze to get them up to temp and they go from good to fantastic. The only problem I've had is the last month or so they've become rather mediocre. Still miles better than standard, but not as mad as usual. I put this down to pad wear, as I've had the pads on the car for over 6 months now and I don't exactly go easy on the middle pedal... Last time I checked there was still plenty of meat on them though.

At the same time Boo got a Hispec 285mm 4-pot kit and while initially he reported back they were great, I tried them at the Pod last October and they were awful (really, really awful). We put this down to the Green Stuff pads, which he's changed and got his brakes back.

TBH, I don't think there's much in it between the Hispec and Wilwood kits, both are more than adequate for road use (as long as the Green Stuff pads are avoided). You can go bigger and you can buy better, but for me when my Wilwoods are on form I certainly can't see any point going down either road (although those lucky AP boys will certainly disagree I'm sure).

I've run a stock set-up - not very powerful and fades with-out much trying

Now got Black Diamond Combi Discs (drilled and slotted) and have run both Greenstuff Pads and others - improvement over stock in that they don't seem to fade much (I'm quite light on brakes, mostly) but the power isn't still up to scratch. IMHO I like the Greenstuff pads but they lasted no time at all.

Future mods are to replace the discs with the biggest one I can find, replace the calipers with Skyline/300ZX/200SX items and fit the matching master cylinder.

NB I will not be getting slotted discs again if I can avoid it. As I drive to work in my R I will just stick with decent drilled discs.

I liked the Green Stuff pads for the standard caliper (went through a few different types of pads and these were good for the money), but they just don't seem to work well in the Hispec caliper.

Cheers guys!

Keep 'em comming!

I think the 285mm wilwood set up (rally designs) has a one piece disc. How about the others?

Both that and the equivalent Hispec are one-piece disks, as they are too small for alloy bell construction. Go a size bigger and both give you alloy bell construction (which is almost worth it just for the looks).

Anyone fitted the gtir.spares Brembo kit yet? That looks promising.

Still waiting on some shims!

www.raldes.co.uk

They are still honoring the 20% discount if 2 people buy at once and so far they are looking like the ones that will suit my requirments so I may be looking for someone else who wants them shortly. Watch this space!

So are the green stuff pads a bad choice combined with Hi-Spec 325mm discs or is that just a personal comment???

What brake pads do you guys suggest??? :?: [/quote]

It's certainly something I can say from experience with the 285mm disks, as like I said I drove Boo's car and they SUCKED!!! (meanwhile Adrian was behind us in my car trying not to bounce his head off the steering wheel every time he braked...).

I can't say for the 325mm disks and Green Stuff pads, as I've never tried that kit, but I did read Boo's posts after I drove it and the general concensus was they are not a good combo. Can't remember what he went for though.

Currently using Skyline R32 4 pots and using Endless brakepads(spec wise towards street and fast road use).
Brakes pretty good compared to stock.
Dont trash them hard enough so i've yet to experience the term fade.
Only problem i find is that the car dives too much under hard braking.
Any way i can rectify the problem?
My only problem is that the GTI-R hand brakes sucks big time.

Hmm if only i can fit in a Skyline rear caliper incorporating drum brakes for the hand brake. Oh well.

I have larger brakes on my R, bells and rotors, either 310mm, or 315mm I can't remember. They use the standard R calipers mounted on spacer brackets, but I want 4 pots.

Question is, I have a 280mm Willwood Dynalite set up on a 2.0 Nova saloon thats just sitting there. As the calipers are universal I want to use the Willwood calipers on the R, with the 310mm discs.

Can you get Willwood kit for more than 280mm?

If not, how much are the Willwood caliper brackets and 280mm discs?

How many spacers are fitted between each caliper (or spacing in mm) on the R kit?

I've fitted a set of Hi Spec 6-pots with 335mm discs. I'm using Red Stuff pads, they've brought out a revised compound and it seems to work very well from cold, just getting better and better as you get some heat into them.

Used them hard during a recent trak day @ Bedford, they wouldn't fade and just got better the more laps I did. Even thou they're gr8 on the track, they still stop well first thing on a cold morning...

I've gotta say I'm well pleased with this set-up. It's a mod that has transformed the car. Would highly recommend Hi Spec. Check www.f-inbigbrakes.co.uk

It's worth remembering that for any after market brake kit (or any brakes for that matter) to work correctly, they've gotta be fitted properly. That means bleed properly, master cylinder in good working order... blah blah you know the score. I say that just coz some of you mention that some good quality kits haven't performed that well. Just worth keeping in mind.

Both Boo and my brake kits were fitted by Torquesport (who definitely know what they are doing) within a week of each other and bedded in using Ford Motorsport guidelines. But then the problem was the pads, not the fitting.

Beef,

Rally designs also offer a 310mm set up (I think you need 17's or 16's with lots of room)

The Wilwood/Hi-spec kits seem to be getting most peoples votes. Anyone got some real monsters? (AP, Tarox, etc)
