cleaning AM air filter

What do you guys use to clean your aftermarket air filters?

I've got the K&N (HKS on the way) and it is REALLY black and dirty.. I know K&N do a cleaning kit but is it really necissary to buy a K&N cleaning kit..... Any good ideas for a good cleaning??

If you have a K&N you need a Recharge kit £15 ish,comes with its own detergent and more importantly a dirt retention oil :!: :!: :!:

I clean mine with washing up liquid Rinse it out thoroughly till no more bubbles come out of it. Then I put some very low viscosity vacuum pump oil on it to catch the dirt. I haven't had any problems with it.
