Coilover question

I have a set of used JIC coilovers to go on the R' but when taking them apart to fit some new springs I noticed that the actual shock only had about 40mm travel, stop to stop.
The question is when fitted is 40mm going to be enough or will I always be hitting the bumpstops.
I know the best way to find out is to fit them and see but like most of us I'd rather not spend the day fcukin about fitting new suspension only to find out that it's no good.

It would depend on what springs are fitted, but if they're hard enough to stop you bottoming out, you'll probably find them to hard for long journeys ie uncomfortable. :?

So I wonder who would be able to recon these coilovers and remove the valve to give them full compression.
