Continuously Variable Transmission?

Does anyone know if this has been tried with a GTI-R?

Maybe an answer to our gearbox problems, or maybe not ;-)

Noone's tried it yet. I haven't heard of anyone using it on high power cars yet.

I'll do some digging to see whether its viable and relatively cheap. I think williams used it in the F1 cars for a while (until it got banned) and managed to get rediculously good laptimes with it.

Sounds a good idea though in theory - maximise engine performance and remove the jolts of shifting.
