Gear linkage knocking ?!

Right, after changing most of the front suspension and steering parts, I still have an annoying knocking that only happens on small bumbs, I can't feel it through the suspension and when in the drivers seat, sounds like it's coming from the N/S/F. When bouncing up and down on teh front of the car with the bonnet up, it sounds like it's coming from the cetre of the car, behind the engine. The only way I can describe it is like a small hammer thudding on metal. Like if you tapped the underpan of the car with a very small tack hammer :?

When I was under the car changing the N/S steering arm I noticed that the gearshift linkage, between the gearstick and gearbox, was very easy to swing around. It appears to be worn at the gearstick end. Has anyone experienced knocking from this before ? I should also add that I have a B&M short shift on the car, I guess that moves the linkage rod closer to the car ?! Could it be worn bushes at the end of the gearstick that are causing this knocking ?

Cheers
