gtir rattle

just recently bought a j plate gtir with re-built engine.Started it this morning and it started rattleing. It rattle's on the over run not when its under load or ticking over. It is not getting any worse.
Could it be a hydraulic tappet jammed or possibly a big end gone?
is it difficult to remove the cams to look at the followers and can the big end caps be easily removed for big end inspection?
any help much appreciated

We don't have hydraulic tappets, they're solid.
It sounds like the main or big end bearings.
Although I've never had my sump off, it should be easy enough to check the big ends in situ.

it could be the hydraulic timing chain tensioner, my friend has a 2litre almera gti which is n/a version of the r engine, his had simalar niose changed tensioner and it went think it was about £60 and its quite easy to change apparently
