GTiR stuck in 4th????

Hello guys, Im new to the forum with this name but I have been on here for a few years prior mainly as a reader but lost my details.
Anyway cut to the chase, my friend has a slight problem with his car, its stuck in 4th gear. Now the gearstick has no sprung loaded action and so is all over the place and will not select any gears.
My imediate thoughts were something to do with the selector as the car still drove ok and there are no whines/grinds.
Upon inspection everything gear selector wise up to the gearbox seems ok....
So, does anyone with more experiance and tech knowledge have any idea what this could be?
I know its most likely gonna need a new box but if you dont ask and so on.

is the linkage connected all the way to the box?

Yup, It was my first thought, but everything seems fine selector wise from the gear stick to the box.

remove the linkage from the box and get a screwdriver and try operate the gear selector direct from the box itself, by pushing it through the 2 bolt holes.
if thats all flopping about then my guess is that you either have a broken selector or maybe the grub screw has snapped which holds the selector rod itself (inside the box) either way it needs to come out and have casing removed to see what the fault is.
