How to install the rocker arm retainer spring?

From looking in the service manual it looks like pic 2 is the correct way.. But Ive had 2 heads with the springs as in pic 1.........?

Your right, from the manual it does look like they should be put in as they are in picture 2. But they dont look right that way round :?

I'm sure i put mine back in the same as the first pic, which is how they came out
