hi guys /gals ... my R has blown its head gasket .. i didnt want to pay what the average tuner is asking so i have put the the car in the hands of a mechanic i know and trust and who charges less than half the prices quoted by my local R specialist .. i ve decided to fit 87mm forged je pistons ,which are on there way thanks to a recent gtiroc group buy .. im trying to source any specific info i can pass on to my mechanic as hes never
worked on an R before ...questions that spring to mind are
what size head gasket do i need to source?
is it just a case of re boring the block to fit the pistons , if so will the new pistons come with measurements detailing the specs for the bore size ?
are there any other things that he ll need to complete the job?
any info would be greatly appreciated an R off the road is a travesty

ay ereboring? what u on about?
there same size! you numpty lol. there low compression only?
87mm is oversize, so the block would need a rebore to fit them. So it looks like you're the numpty

I'd have thought the pistons should come with the info on what bore size is needed.

If you're having forged pistons then you may as well get a metal head gasket as well. Most people go for 1.2mm ones from HKS/Tomei but you can go as thin as 1mm or as thick as 2mm depending on what comp ratio you are after.
If you're mechanic knows what he's doing then I'd have thought he'd know the answers to the rest of your questions :?: .If in doubt, save up and take it to a tuner who specialises in the R to save tears in the future.

Does your mechenic have in house machining?, if he does then he should know. He will probably sent it to a local engine builder and they should definatly know. But, i understand your point, i never take my car to a moder/tuner company because i know the sort of prices they charge, and half the time, they havent a clue what they are doing anyway.

As far as your answers mate, sorry i dont have a clue, but if the nissan head gasket lasted this amount of time, i would buy another nissan gasket price depending. If the hks is the same price as the nissan buy the hks, something else to add to the car spec, swings and roundabouts

Have you ordered the pistons in the group buy i set up? :?

Head gasket if you've ordered pistons off me should be 1.2mm. I can get them for approx £100 (pm me if you want one ;))

JE pistons will come with full fitting instructions.

Like people have said if the garage know what they are doing then they should not need to ask you lots of questions. The garage that has done mine, all i did was give them the pistons and they sorted out the rest :D

Why go to a jap specalist for a rebuild :?: Any decent engine builder can fit pistons. Most engine builders outsource the machine work to a machine shop who specalise in boaring/honing blocks. All an engine builder does is build it up to the correct spec and tolrances. IMO too many people go on and on about Jap tuners. At the end of the day they tune up cars which is different to building an engine. Also, jap tuners will charge you an arm and a leg for a rebuild!!
