The engine comes out very easily and quickly, so for the time and trouble you'll save just take it out. Mike and I did the clutch on my R starting at 8:30am and had the car running by lunch. It might sound daunting, but it's really not that big a deal.

No I don't think it's any quicker myself, But the best person to ask is Olly because this is how he does them all the time  , Mike takes the engine out so you could ask him also for advice.

It took me 3 day's takeing the gearbox out, but it was my first R clutch, This time I took the engine out, I found it easy'er that way, But what ever way you do it it's not an easy job.

im getting a hand with it - we've had a look and it does look a bitch of a job. think we may give it a go engine in - he has the use of a ramp at work which should make it a bit easier :?

I think I've heard people say Mike (Ex-Gtir) can drop the engine in about 2 hours, splitting the engie and box, changing the clutch and putting it back together should then be fairly straight forward, So I'd be surprised if he can't do the whole thing in about 6hours (at a guess) with no problems. But he will be able to tell you the time.
Olly does it with the engine in and someone said he takes about 12hours, but again he will be able to confirm the time.
So looking at that it's alot easier to do it taking the engine out...IF you have al the specialist tools necessary
