is it worth front mounting the standard i/c?

it seems to be a decent size so why spend loads on a bigger one?i only plaan to run 1bar but even at 0.8 if i sit for a bit it feels a bit sluggish.i know it would be nicer to have a bigger one but is the standard one ok?

it has been done before with reasonable results.i suppose it all comes down to budget.if you can afford to,you get a big fmic,if you can't,you don't

have a search thru the archives,i'm sure you'll find loads of info on fm the standard cooler.

some bloke also posted a while back with some big intercooler test. and the standard gti-r one fared very well.. i replied to the thread to try and get the article as it was one of these pay per view ones.. but no luck

http://forum.gtiroc.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=24120&highlight=

and front mounting will cure the heat soak which is peoples main gripe with it.. read a wicked article on how to choose the right intercooler with loads of equations..
It focused on a few considerations, like how much boost cause that is proportional to heat. The volume and velocity of the air entering the intercooler.. then it looked at they way intercoolers slow down the air and let it cool.. i'll have a dig and see if i can find it.

http://www.sdsefi.com/techcooler.htm some helpfull info on building one and the associated piping

http://a.raczynski.home.comcast.net/intercoolertestlab.pdfa more techy doc that might help you decide on your pipe run, and if you look at the end tank design on the gti-r's intercooler you will notice it looks like the ideal design on this guy's thesis.. he he...

compare that to some of the aftermarket cooler end tanks and you might think twice about them.

thats what i plan to do, as long as you duct the air to go through it. People make the mistake of just puting an intercooler in the front and not do this simple mod. Air will take the easy route and go arount it. Ive modified the front mount so both ports of the intercooler are on the same side.

Damm house is taking up so much time at the mo so i havent don it yet.

I havent got any pipes made yet, i plan to copy the norris designs type where he has lowered the rad to allow the pipes to go under the slam panel. Or i could turn the intercooler upside down and run the pipes under the rad, havent desided yet..
will let you all know as soon as i do it.

very interesting.
i'm using a gtir intercooler to front mount on a silvia s12 running a ca18det from an s13.

i have heard good things about the gtir cooler so long as its not top mounted. i'll post back my results when its all fitted.
anyone here using the R's cooler frount mounted on their R?

cool as fcuk, i love them old silvias, very underated. Take off the cooling fan thats run off the engine and put an electric set up, give you a few more horses. Take a fan of a bluebird turbo, its prob the same rad

i'm using a pair of gtir fans on the stock rad. running one from a switch on the dash for drifting mode and the other from a thermo in the water pipe.
i've not seen a dyno sheet to prove it but the viscous fan is meant to sap 5bhp. some people say they have had 5.5 more after removing it.

not a lot but the best thing is that with no fan on the front of the engine, it revs up a lot freely. along with a lighter flywheel and some skimmed pullies it should be loads of fun.

my main prob with the s12 atm is the lack of steering lock. not a massive issue but to hold very big drift angles i'm going to have to work on the steering.

as i said. i'll report back when the current batch of work is done and let you know how the R's ic works as a front mount.

The Norris one uses a different rad to standard. If you have the entrance/exit of the ic to the bottom then you might be able to get away with using the standard rad. Will probably have to do a bit of cutting to the bodywork though.
