Bloody alternator gave up 42 miles in to running the new engine in.

bit pisse@ off £270 three years ago

was doing ok until i switched the lights on then engine stalls going down hill, no brakes, and brown marks in my pants!

put the multi reader on it 12.6 v running then 6v with the head lights on i take it, its fuc@ed

More like the crappy head light connectors are shorting.......it's a very common fault

The two could be linked.

My alternator failed, then I found my headlight plug had melted; I've got a feeling one cause the other (either I shorted the headlights putting the new alternator in, or the headlights shorted causing the alternator to burn-out).

silly question steve how do i check to see if they are shorting

Look at the condition of them, they might look like they've been melting/burning and also feel them to see if they get that hot they almost burn you.

look for melted plugs on the light bulbs nick

Cheers Bob have deleted my inboxDo you know if you have a plug hanging around as well I think I might of damaged the alternator by getting these two wires around the wrong way!

i will have the plug but it means chopping up a good engine wiring harness, ive got little lee looking now to see if we have one thats a bit worst for wear, if so then il just do you the whole loom as cheap as chips

New battery, New headlight plugs, and new alternator from Bob will not work,
any more ideas on what could be killing the alternator's
Bob may need another if the alternator man can not Recon the one you sent
