I think we are going to need a centre fixing.I know mine flexes looking from inside, but did not know it was as much as that. It must be causing quite a bit of drag. What speed were you doing in the photo?. Den.

With Avon rise approaching rapidly i was trying not to look at the speedo but the needle was somewhere between 130 and 140mph :shock:

could you not fibre glass in a piece of aluminium box section on the under side to stiffen the front?
I was thinking along the lines of bonding something stiff across the front of the bonnet.

Mines been on for a while now and hasn't broken. I think you'll be alright. My only concern would be if it increases drag at all by letting more air under it.

The lightest and thinest bonnet I ever made for the Pulsar is mine...it flaps around so much the chap who does my mapping always wounders if its going to fly up.....in 5 years is hasnt so far, and neither has any others I know of. Den has also run one for many years.
It already has wood built into it right around it and across the front and middle, I have seen Escort Mk2 F/G bonnets rise much higher than that, you could get your fist into them. Also have a look at some old Special saloon pics there panels used to flap and gap like mad. They used to tape the joins as well.
Have you blocked the 2 vents in the top grill ? (where your nissan badge is) I have also made a plate across the slam panel and run mine with very little gap in the front its almost touching the lights and middle grill.
Increase drag is not a great problem when you still have the large vent above wide open, imagine how much air is flooding in there, block that too, (Carl can run a flatter bonnet) you could build in extra strengthing alloy tube for example but you would add more weight, plus its not realy the material that adds the strength but the shape of the glass shape going over it, and using a core material in a bonnet? thats total crap, its not a bloody boat.
Its always going to flex to some extent it all depends how much your comfortable with? But with you bonnet pins I doubt it will ever to fly up. You could fit a small centre strap or clip if your worried, I would be veryvery suppriesed if mine does not lift a lot more.

Talking of drag, where do we stand on the subject of raising the rear of the bonnet? Supposedly helps with cooling, but how does it affect drag, if at all?

on a car shaped like a brick and a great fucking whale tail hanging off the rear i doubt itll make much difference either way

Lol I must agree with VSS.
Raising the bonnet at the rear can actually suck air back in....If you feel the heat of the bonnet about half way up especially on the drivers side after a fast run thats the place we should put vents, look at the WRC bonnets especially the Ford Focus..they are either side on each edge roughly half way up...

Best investment is to buy a reverse vent for the bonnet (similar to what Impreza's run when they move to a FMIC)

A bit like this...



This will suck out more air from the engine bay, also aid air flow via the intercooler and radiator, prevent equal air pressure (air flow stalling) in the engine bay, reduce drag and also help to reduce the bonnet flexing

Cant use that in the road going production class in speed events...did think of that before.
But you can use it in mod prod..and no I'm not going to make a mould,,,,well not at the moment too busy.

Do you remember my standard sunny bonnet I modified with the inverted bonnet vent? I found there wasn't much clearance between the exhaust manifold and the bonnet that limited what you could do. Equally if you wrapped the metal over the exhaust manifold like a heat shield you didn't end up with much space either at the front. In the end the inverted scoop was 3" deep by about 24" wide to give a decent sized hole. The front lip just was roughly in line with the exhaust manifold.

More modern cars have more space between engine and bonnet for pedestrian safety so can probably get away with the bigger scoop.

Mine did help with engine temps but obviously there was no discernible difference in drag (for all the good reasons Marytn said). The bonnet I got for free and was a little rusty so it went in the bin when I left the country. Sadly no photos either :-(

What about the one that Geoff has? It's a reversed configuration, but it's in the same bonnet; could you get away with that? - It's still a standard boonet, but the plastic scoop part is modified.
