quick one about oil seperator

if i take it off to clean it up abit will it make a mess if the engine has been stood for a while , like will the be oil in it still , need to know so i dont get covered in the stuff,

it will be empty - the oil drains to the sump...

While it's off though it wouldn't do any harm to give it a clean out. I filled mine with white spirit, left it over night then gave it a good shake. It was surprising how much gunk had built up in it.
