I'm interested in converting a gti-r to rwd only.
Anyone know exactly what's involved e.g, what parts i need, prices, problems etc....
and what companies in the uk would be suitable to do the conversion.
any help appreciated.

I've got a box thats converted to rwd ready to be built up just needs some new bearings and some covers made for the drive shaft holes, but i've lost interest now as there's no guarantee it will work and its alot of hassle to fit the box and find out it doesn't :cry:
I'm still tempted to finish it though as it looks like it would be alot of fun 8) bit dangerous on the road though :oops:

that was a quick reply,
I did wonder about the standard box being converted but i thought it the holes left in it afterwards would be troublesome, that's one of the reason i want to find out the details, because i don't know, i think there's 3 ways this could go,
1.custom setup, probably from specialist transmission company, expensive no doubt.
2.another nissan it can be taken from,
3.standard gearbox modified(ideally)

apart from just converting to rwd, are there any problems with taking out front drive shafts etc... anything else i need to do. Or is it just a case of taking it off?

i searched on the internet for a gti-r tuning company that does this sort of thing but couldn't find one.

Isn't there a chappy over in OZ running a permanant RWD R? :? If I remember correctly he'd prob be the best person for you to speak to - can anyone help out with the name?

Have you seen the videos?
Why would you want to?
Besides the burnouts of cause. Doesn't look like the easiest car to drive!

I know Sash's reasons.
Test 1/4mile times RWD vs AWD
Lap times RWD vs AWD
Power at wheels RWD vs AWD to figure out drive train loss.

thanks for all the feedback, i've got someone i can email now.

i did see the video, it looks a bit lairy, maybe it's been highly tuned.
my engine would be basically standard.

reasons i want to do it
-more power at the the wheels
-less weight
-handling in the dry / balance
-fun

Fun, it certainly will be. For a while.
Short wheelbase, lots of power, RWD spells trouble.
Weight wont be signifcantly less.
Unless you intend on your car being a dyno queen, more power at the rears will be useless when you cant get traction.

Good luck though.
Sasha's car is about 230kw ATW i think

before i went ahead, I would have to ask someone who has done it how it drives, i wouldn't be doing it yet anyway.

And i'm not thinking about it because i want better bhp figures on a dyno. I'm not after a power monster.

how much weight do u think i would save by taking off the front diff etc..

what's the normal transmission loss on the 4 wheels drive, and how much do you think that would be reduced by converting to rwd.

i am glad someone else has had the same idea as me i was gettin worried

so what was the final answer

do you just take out the drive shafts and bung the holes up or does the diff take over and mess about with where the power is going

we are looking at racing one of these next season but 4wd is not allowed

using a 2.5 v6 vectra atm but its just not quick enough

therse a geezer with a cossie kickin butt

need to reel him in a bit

Then centre diff/carrier will require modifing and the front driveshafts removing and the holes sealed, you can remove the front diff but you might be best leaving it in for extra strenght between the centre diff to transfer box shaft.
Tbh though I would have thought the R would have a to short a wheel base to make it a viable rwd race car think it would be just to much of handfull :( what about a rwd subaru impreza that would be pretty good as a rwd race car as it would have good balance etc

yeh and all u gota do is take a fuse out and u got rear wheel drive in a suburu lol :wink:
