Suspension question

I took the springs off a pair of standard rear struts. This might be a silly question but is there a right way up for the springs or can I reassemble them either way up?
I can't see any paint marks on the springs to identify top or bottom. Maybe I should have taken more notice when taking them off, or doesn't it matter?

they should only fit 1 way correctly cos the spring needs to sit in the grove on the strut seat!

Thanks, I just went and had a look at them and, although they look the same either way up, yes there is only one way they fit properly.
