Is it just there to stop you putting the wrong nozzle and hence fuel in or is it a seal as well?
The reason I'm asking is that I just filled up and found mine sitting at a 45degree angle waiting to drop into the tank, it's now inside the car. I'm hoping no one has been interfering with it as my alarm hasn't warned me of anything.
