IDing gearbox - RB or standard

Hi,

I've got a spare gear-box and I'm trying to identify what it is, standard or RB? Can anyone shed any light on how to identify from serial numbers, stamping or physical attributes?

Not to sure if you can really tell just buy looking at the box.
You maybe able to take the fill plug out the gearbox and have a look in the hole?
I posted this thread about a close ratio box i have as i was not sure if it was a nismo box or an rb box,i think it is an rb box?
If you look at 3rd gear you can see its different also the gear sizes are different so if you can get a look from the fill plug you maybe able to tell?
If not you will proberly have to take the top of the box off to have a proper look.
In the same thread markturbo posted some pics of standard ra internals to give you an idea of what they look like.

You'd think there would be an easier way, like a different part number stamped on the casing; not that I've ever noticed it myself.

There must surely be a clue in the serial numbers on the gearbox ?! Vauxhalls are easy, my super-track-shitter had an F20 gearbox. Nicely and clearly stamped on the box. Plus, the serial numbers gave it away.

I'll have a close look and see if Nissan can tell me (probably not!!!)?

if the cases are the same would the serial number mean anything these days?

Good point!! Hadn't considered that! Visual inspection it is then.

as said there is no way of telling unless you rip the tail piece off and examine the gearset russ, pain in the ass i know, but its the only real way of telling

Cant you put it in first gear by pulling the gear selector shaft and turn some thing and count the number of turns? You might need a transfer box on? so you could turn the prop about 10 turns and count how much the drive shaft turns (or where the drive shafts go)?
Or am i talking sh!t ;-)
