Just made my R quieter with a silenced de-cat then get stopped for the first time ever by motorway cops in a layby on a b road checking nomber plates and exhausts with their little microphone and gave me a ticket.Its not part of the MOT so how are you supposed to know what the limit is ????????????????? 82dcb is their limit nobody elses !

Contest the ticket, because it's an import there's no way they'll be able to prove the noise levels from the factory, as far as the mot goes, I understand it's at the discretion of the tester, although I've always found their harsh on blows but fine if the systems all sealed properly.
It's a nuisance level rather than a limit isn't it? An MOT tester can't fail it because of the exhaust noise, but they can simply refuse to test it because the level is a hazard to their hearing (which I think is fair enough).
Was it an on the spot fine; it's pretty hard to do anything about that unless you're willing to spend the time in court?

I think the MOT's have changed recently. My friend has a celica gt4 and recently re-built it and had it all re-mapped etc. Anyway... when he came to MOT it EVERY test station (he took it to 4 I believe) failed it due to the noise levels.....
My other mate Phil owns his own garage and he too is an MOT tester; he has cofirmed that he will not pass a car if the exahaust is beyond a certain point.... the way round it for my mate was to fit a silencer in the tail pipe which worked a treat.....

It doesn't help the fact that the test stations are in the building... it makes the exhaust sound so much louder than it really is. My mate celica was nearly unbearable when stood next to it, even slightly over tick-over. Out-doors though, it's fine...

82db is taking the piss.I've seen wheelie bins rated at 99db(not kidding).
82db sounds like a pass to me. Trackdays seem to range between 95 to 105db and IIRC I've seen aftermarket exhausts sold in the US advertised as <85db.

Sounds like he's given you a VDR ticket, non endorsable.
If that's the case take it back to the MOT and have a word, he'll re-test it and it should fly through.

I'm afraid they can mate - my previous R with the front exit exhaust got turned away from three garages before even getting on a ramp because of the noise.

silenced de-cats only really help if theyre new. the older your exhaust is, the louder itll be..

it can fail because of high noise levels.
If the garage has refused to test it they have done you a favour cos they could have taken your money then given you a fail

I sure that theres a tried a and trusted method as to how they make this test work ?? like at a certain rev level and a set hight and distance from the exhaust .Or maybe they can use use there discretion and say its to loud ?? .You need to take it to an exhaust builder and have a large back box fitted to get the sound levels down apart from the cost it does make the car more enjoyable to drive.
