800 + bhp at the wheels

I've been following this build for a while, some people might have seen this but incase you haven't its Orville Williams drag pulsar from Jamaica. A couple weeks ago it made 809 bhp at the wheels shortly before one of the conrods failed in spectacular style

The whole build thread is well worth reading through if you've got some spare time to kill. He's had a few set backs but seems determined to overcome every little problem and keep developing the car  If only all gti-r owners had his mentality and didn't give up at the first sign of problems

This is the car

And what happened to the rods

Reading through it looks like a previous headgasket failure was the cause of the rod failure. So next time your car is giving you problems just remember its nothing compared to what this guy has put up with and overcome ;-)

Amazing what can happen from a small failure, hydraulicing an engine and not knowing caused that mess!
I didn't read all the thread, but was under the impression it was a suggestion rather than definite cause? They do look a little small for 250+hp/cylinder.

they had H/G failure on cylinders 1-3 which happens to be the rods that failed......... i do agree that the rods are getting to there limit. he's getting arrow titainium rods next though, all on a standard crank as well

I know a lot of other things are uprated and its running a VET head but it just proves how good our engines are really, and to think some people crap themselves at the thought of 300bhp on a standard engine

My engine keeps going past the limits of what i thought would be possible on standard internals, i reckon it must be getting on for 200 bhp over standard power now judging by the fact i hit 119mph on a damp 1/4 mile the other day. Just goes to show how good they are if tuned and cooled correctly 8)

yep standard engines are bloody strong,

Then take losses and think what each cyl is doing. Your probably not far off 260-300hp/cyl.

Going further assuming the over all efficiency is about 20%, then the other 80% is lost in heat. So 1000hp=745Kw of useful power, and 80% = 3000 ish Kw of wasted heat/exhaust/cooling system etc. That basically means this engine produces about 3.7MW of overall heat... lol.

Too much information to take in for a Wednesday morning but have I understood they've used a collar tp prevent the gearbox exploding at 1000hp whilst using sticky drag tyres?

@Mark, I hadn't realised you are still on standard internals. Have you broken the UK record then for most power on standard internals?

i also thought you had built a forged engine mark : /

its strange really, obiously if the head had lifted or there was ingress of water into cylinders then theres likely to be one big holy mess somewhere along the line.....ie seen aftermarket bent rods on someones car who filled it up with diesel.

i just wonder though how much it would take to bend or snap a stock rod as ive never seen one damaged before other than where a bearing has spun or stock rod bolt has let go (and that was through having a spun bearing)

nice power granted but as someone has already pointed out.....its one fooking oogly car even by gtir standards lol, but fair play to the guy for having a crack at it.

quite a tidy unsuspecting engine bay, compared to other lower power cars that are brimming with junk!

I wonder how much the pointed nose helps with aerodynamics? But yes you're right it is one ugly car :yuck:

No, because unless i stick it on the rollers there's no way of knowing what power its running ;-) If you want to take a guess it did a 12.1 @ 119mph with a 2.2 sec 64 ft time and is running 1.7 bar on a 3071.

Just out of interest what is the highest figure anyones got on standard internals these days?

420bhp ish for yours, highest i have ever seen on a standard lump was dyno dynamics 377bhp highest i have ever heard of was 399bhp and there was another questionable 407bhp (standard injectors?! and notorious mapper)
