ive noticed a problem with my temp gauge? i leave it to warm up when i first start the car & let it get to half way on the gauge before i drive it. then if i do about 10 miles the temp gauge on the dash will go down to cold?? thenwarm up agian if im sat at traffic lights... i thought it could be a dodgy temp sencor but when i pull over to check rad pipes there only slightly warm??

now ive bled the system several times & still no luck?? could it be a thermostat issue?? ideas guys? :?

That does sound like air doesn't it? You get a reading when the sender is in the water, but nothing when it's out. - Given that it comes back up when the car isn't moving, I'd look at the wiring; I'd guess it's an intermittent connection: When the car is stationary it's touching; when you're moving the connection breaks.

There's a similar problem with Hyundais; I can't remember which engines it is, but the oil pressure wire is close to the fan belt and gets the insulation stripped. Then when the fans come on the blow the wires and it tells you there's no oil pressure.

For peace of mine take it out and test it or just change it!! puts you one step nearer to solving your problem .

it could possibly be the thermostat mate, its worth replacing it for what they cost, mine was degrading on the rubber part and allowing too much flow through it, causing it to run cold whilst driving it, iirc they're not much more than 15 quid from nissan dude, just make sure you use the correct antifreeze/coolant and you undo the bleed screw when you refill the system, hope this helps buddy:).

sorry ive not replied to this post my computer packed up so ive just managed to use my mates.

@pobody im not sure it is electrical because the rad pipes are just warm when it starts to run cold then hot when it reaches normal temp!

ive put the car away for winter now so ill fit a new thermostat ready for next year & see if that solves the problem!

what antifreeze is best to use? im using the blue stuff at 50/50 mix. is this right?

cheers!

is the water level staying at the top of the rad cap? if not then this sounds like there is a leak somewhere which is causing the airlock. air doesn't just get into the system without water getting out.

if your using blue, then use blue again unless you completely flush the system. different types of antifreeze can react or counteract each other.

Usually it's one of those annoying ones at the back of the engine; right where you can't reach it, and you never see it drip because the hot exhaust takes care of that.

yeah i had heard some horror stories about this, been looking at mine while the engine is out and it looks like someone has replaced those lines before. new hose clips are the giveaway.

if i wasn't going to the mountains for the snow this winter, i would have taken the water pipes off the inlets but i think i need that warming function when it's -20 outside.

Awesome. - I wanted to take mine to Lapland a couple of years ago, but in the end it was cheaper to fly to Helsinki and drive up from there in a rental.

I'd love to hear how you get on.

for sure you need the maximum heating function, the R, doesn't provide much heat, at -40 you just have enough to keep windows clear, lol

i can inly think its the thermostat but i wont know now untill next year as ive put her away for winter now!
