lets talk about weight

After searching the Wiki on weights, i see there are weights for parts but couldn't find any on the whole car.

Is it possible to get the GTIR's down to 900KG or lower? (without driver and roll cage)

thanks Mark

Anything is possible, depends how much money you want to spend. But realistically without spending mega bucks I think 1000kg is achievable.

I remember a sprint car that had more holes than the polo factory where it had been 'lightened', owner had spent thousands on carbon, lightened bolts, the works... But he must have spend a similar amount on his pie budget - fella must have been 25st if he was an ounce.
Best and cheapest way to drop weight from the car is to get the driver to lay off the Ginsters.

I think Jason Gants old car was down to about 980kg by going stupid on weight saving. Mine got down to about 1040 or 1060KG without going too stupid.

Maybe not mega bucks, but could be several thousand. £3K at least I reckon.

When it was at TOTB they'd taken everything not necessary out including the dash so the gauges were cable-tied to the support for the steering column.

I would imagine that's as light as it ever was because after that didn't they start bolting plywood on to make the time attack car?

3k to achieve a 20% improvement in power to weight ratio seems like a bargain to me. But I guess it's all relative.

It's cheap if you've got the money, but that was just for making new composite panels, a set of light weight wheels and a c/f seat. You could spend a lot more if you had the money and determination to go mad.

Thinking about it that £3K was also a good few years back maybe 7-8ish, so inflation would take it's toll on that now.

Yes with a full space frame and composite body and not road legal.....all you need is lots of money and time.

1100kg without too much effort. 900kg is probably too low.
This....

I weighed in at 1060kg without a cage. I'd try and take as much weight from the front and middle of the car rather than the rear to try and balance out the weight distribution.

GRP or carbon bonnet, doors and boot lid would also help.

Plastic windows, race seat, harnesses, complete strip out inc sounds deadening.

Remove all the additional crap in the engine bay, emissions junk, ICV units and air con of you still have it?

After that, get the drill out....

....oh and go on a diet/to the gym!

Plastic windows,
Oh yeah, forgot about them add another £500ish
And £500ish for the tyres to go with wheels. (well I went from 15s to 16s and a much smaller diameter tyre)
Lightweight flywheel and pulleys is another 6 or 7KG save maybe and another £5-700ish.

A front exit exhaust would save a fair bit 10-20kg depending what it replaces but isn't very road or ear friendly.

My car is a non air con model, has no sound deadening, one of Phils lightweight bonnets, Sparco carbon bucket seats and was 1180kg on the local weighbridge.

As Andy said you're better off trying to take weight from the front half of the car.
