yep, 16's would be what id prefere! the lighter the better! 8)
If you've got a problem with tyre flex, try fitting ZR rated tyres or using a wider rim or larger alloy.

With these things there's a balance and smaller tyres will improve handling response but will also decease overall grip (static contact patch)
