General purpose of rear spoiler

I have just about been able to get my car into the garage at times as the rear spoiler keeps cliping the garage door everytime i pull it down as it sticks out a bit.

But on another note i am just thinking of sticking a smaller gti spoiler on.
Now just woundering will this affect performance, what was the point of the gti-r spoiler to help in downforce?

Please don't say leave it on for looks, I want to know the actual purpose of the larger gti-r spoiler over the gti one or no spoiler at all.

my first black one had a gti spoiler on it when i got it, the backend used to get abit light on very fast sweeping bends, it felt abit unsafe tbh and was promptly changed

At very high speeds - say above 120mph it'll give a bit of downforce. Other than that it does f*ck all but look cool.

Seriously though, I'm sure I read in these very pages that it provides something like 150 kg's of downforce at speed (above 100 mph) ?!
I'd say that's not inconceivable as, it is a very large wing.

Being serious I've read that too but I know some disagree with its affect. Kieron isn't the only person I've heard of who's said they didn't like the high speed stability without it so make your own judgement.

When I ripped my old pulsars spoiler off in a car wash :doh: , I had to drive around for a few weeks with out a spoiler, And it was really nasty in the high speed bends and even on the motorway it wasn't as stable .

You provide your own downforce mate :-D ;-).

It'll reduce the size of the vortex and amount of turbulence behind the car due to the slots in the shape.
Obviously just enough to improve the rear-end handling enough to be noticeable, if not as much as the Escort Cosworth jobbie does...

Reason for gtir spoiler prevents the air flow wrapping around the roof/hatch transition, so reduces drag and lift. So unless you have found another way of dealing with drag and lift it looks like it needs to stay

Thank you guys once again for your input, so i better leave it on and tell the missues to clear the extra junk out the garage so i can drive further in, lol.
Don't want to be slidding about the road when high boosting and driving at high mph

Don't want to make it easier for theifs to drive off, plus my garage is at an angle so harder to reverse into than it is coming out.
Also i once did reverse in and cracked the rear light on the junk inside so i just drive forward now and use the bumper to push the crap forward.

According to my mate who was following me to the Pod on his motorbike, the old R spoiler does quite a bit 8) He said he had to keep a fair distance behind me because if he got too close he was blown all over the shop :lol:
He's never followed a car that blew him about quite so much :lol:
No wonder we get through so much fuel :roll:
If you can see out of the back window when it's raining, you'll notice how high the spray gets thrown :twisted:

You must have a very low garage door if it's catching the spoiler, do you have to limbo in and out of your garage?;-)

How do you manage to get your radio aeriel in as that's alot higher on my car.:?
