Raising the compression?

I did mine more or less on my own on a weekend, but had the help or a 4 post lift I would not attempt it on my own in a normal garage. Was the first time I did one so could knock a good bit of time off the next time.
I left the engine in but can see why they take them out complete. The one bolt behind the speedo drive is a sod. To give you an idea one specialist alows 9 hours for a g/box swap.
Good luck

I am taking it to a garage I decide as really dont have the time to attempt it myself plus I dont really have enough tools. But I have been quoted £250 for it which I dont think is to bad.

It took me about 4-5h with the engine in on a first time. It's pain in the **** to do it that way( at least for me), but if you don't have post lift then this would be you best option. but if you can use lift then it would be 2h job and all so you can check the pipes for leak behind the engine while it's out. Best of all have a buddy give you a hand, the case is heavy and getting it on on your own is a little tricky.
Good luck

Smokey pulsar

Ok ive been asked by my mate to have a wee look on here and try help him diagnose the problem b4 he goes and splashes out on a new turbo.,
Basically he got the car with the engine out as the gearbox was needing replaced.Just b4 he refitted the engine he stripped the head off and had a wee look.
Now hes a mechanic so knows what to look for.Everything seemed fine,no play in the pistons,no pitted on the tops, valves etc were all ok.When he refitted it he replaced the
HG with a steel item.

Now its developed a bit smoke and a wee idle problem. When its ticking over it sounds a tad lumpy,as if its gonna cut out but it dosnt. He took it for a test drive and it was boosting fine etc.But when he revs it its smokey as ****.Blue smoke and lots of it.Also when its coming down the revs it backfires badly.Gives off the sound like its running launch control.Has that kinda pop pop pop but very loud.

When the turbo was off there was no play in the shaft, maybe the seals are away tho.The car did sit for a while so could be needing a good run but hes not so sure.It does look turbo related tho.

Hope sum1 can help point him in the right direction.

over fueling?timing out, worn engine? leak down test first,or at least comp test it before doing anything,as it could be one of many things wrong.

only just seen you said standard ecu?!?

You'll need to buy something to get it mapped.

The Racing Line in halifax will add a daughterboard and mapp using NISTUNE for about £500.

Micra Ed can remap standard ecus, but he's abit too far away from you.
Try The Racing Line as mentioned above.
