Raising the compression?

You need to measure the width of the journal.

If the gap between the sides of the crank and the rod will be too big it's not worth doing (that's the info from Pauter themselves).

probs getting max power UPDATED 09/03/08

hi , cars been in with the local jap specialist for a top end rebuild , bottom was done with forged pistons .. ive supplied everything for 400 brake , 3071 brand new /700 c c sards / apexi power fc (used)/ q45 maf / turbosmart boost controller etc walbro frontmount .. they have had the car for 5 or 6 days and have mapped the low and mid range , but they cant get the car too put out anything past 300 ish brake , they are running the 3071 at 1.2 bar as a start point and were expecting 340 / 350 ish , but the car is not making power .. they assure me they will get to the bottom of this but have been on it for 6 days .. they have gone back over the mechanics and checked everything , they said it was blowing the hoses off ( boost not water) so they flared all my pipework .. is there anything that could be causing this to happen , they have tried different maf setups to rule out the used q45 being duff ..

im looking for some advice or ideas to pass on to them cheers

tbh matey, there the people you have trusted to do your car, and no dis-respect but there hardly likely to take advice from the guy whos paying them to do the job lol
if you go down there and start saying 'you should try this mate' then your really gonna start to p1ss them off!

so best just leave them to sort out the prob, thats what your paying them for afterall;-)

I personally would have gone for the Z32 MAF especially considering your expected output.

Maybe a fueling issue?

If they'd spent 6 days on my car and still didnt know whats wrong with it i'd want to know what they were playing at ;-) Apart from running up a nice big bill for labour charges

yes true but they will probably have already priced him for the job they were going to do, so therefore its down to them to sort out, unless faulty parts had been supplied the balls in their court.
this is a case where he needs to be talking to them and not looking for answers himself!

cheers guys, i have been assured that the £300 price for mapping the power fc is all im going to pay ive made sure of that .. i m not really trying to advise them , im just looking for ideas as to why this could be happening , im off over to see them now to find out the latest .. i ll get more info cant wait to get into the R and out of the skoda fabia deisel courtesy car they ve supplied , with ref to the q45 i was informed that this would be fine for 400 bhp with the z 32 handling up to 450 bhp

By all accounts the Z32 can handle a hell of alot more than 450bhp.

Out of the two, the Z32 is more tuner friendly.

Goodluck with it.

I'm afraid making 200hp per litre on a 15 year old car isn't just about adding a few bits and paying someone £300 to map it. By sorting out lots of little issues, my car makes as much power at 1.4Bar as when it was first put together and running 1.8Bar. One minor leak can make all the difference.

i totally except that , however we are making headway , the tuner im using has farmed the car out to its local rival of all things , and they have started to make power 310 @ 1.0 bar .. i popped down and they are waiting on a fresh set of plugs as the old ones kept blowing out as the boost gets hiked up .. they expect to have the car running around 380 at the end of the day .. still cant sort the idle though , its huntimg when cold and settles at about 1200 rpm once warmed ... ive replaced tps , coolant temp switch (to ecu ) and have just replaced the aac valve at a cost of 218 notes , all rubber caps have been replaced on intake , throttle bodies have been totally de coked , apexi pwer fc still cant get it to idle right ... the q45 has been dis regarded , they tried a z32 off a nissan they had for spares which turned out to be broken , so theyre using a maf off a scooby sti 90mm , does this sound possible ? they said it ll work no problem

Probably not what you want to hear but id still probably stick with the Z32 MAF lol.

So in the end what have this tuner done that the other tuner couldn't?

Is the new TPS set correctly?

Id look for a leak on the throttle bodies / plenum gasket or one of the vac pipes in order to rule that one out.

once the car comes back finally , i will probably source another z32 maf .. the problem with the q45 they said was that they had to write a map for it as the power fc didnt have one , whereas the z32 was already a selectable option within the software .. after spending over 4 grand in the last month im gonna be well pissed if the R still idles erratically .. the tps was set and installed by nissan dealer a year or so back , this garage have just rebuilt the motor so there shouldnt be any air leaks around the inlet manifold , they have said they are going to remove and check the aac valve to make sure its sealing properly so fingers crossed

what the other tuner has done differently im not sure , maybe theyre just a more knowledgable outfit , funny thing was, i ve always used them for my rr sessions but chose to use the new kid on the block for the rebuild , should have stuck with them in the first place

???? WTF ????? I thought the Q45 was the VH41 option in the PFC in the same way as the Z32 is the VG30 option? You just select it and job done. :?

Getting a good idle cold/warm start can take as long as mapping WOT.
